Final Letter from Director of Education re Industrial Action
Mon 30 Jan 2023Please see below a letter from the Director of Education - Gaynor Davies
Dear Parent/Carer,
As you may be aware, the National Education Union (NEU) has announced four days of intended industrial action.
The proposed industrial action dates are as follows: • Wednesday 1st February 2023 • Tuesday 14th February 2023 • Wednesday 15th March 2023 • Thursday 16th March 2023
The decision regarding whether your child’s school will remain open on these dates will be made by your child’s school, based on the school’s individual context and risk assessments. Your child’s school will aim to let you know whether the school will be open at least three working days before each of these dates.
Where schools have made a decision to close in advance of planned industrial action, eFSM learners and learners entitled to a free school meal under the Universal Primary Free School Meal Offer (reception, year 1 and eligible nursery pupils only) will be able to collect a packed lunch from their local community school between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Pupils who are transported to schools (i.e., Faith, Welsh medium and secondary school learners), and some pupils in our special schools without specific diet needs, can access a local school in their community and collect a packed lunch. Your child’s school will contact you shortly in relation to your preferred collection point. It is important that you advise your school if your child has any allergens and is having a packed lunch. In schools that are not closed, Catering Services will provide lunch service as normal. Unfortunately, due to food safety standards it will no longer be possible to send home a packed lunch with your child.
Please note, breakfast clubs will be suspended and not available for Wednesday 1st February 2023.
Additional information will be provided on the proposed further three industrial action days in due course.
Parents and carers are advised that home-to-school transport for eligible pupils will continue to run as normal (unless a school has determined to close prior to the day of planned industrial action).
Where pupils are transported into school and classes or year groups are subsequently affected by the strike action on the day, pupils will need to remain at school. Transport will be unable to undertake an additional morning return journey and drop off at the normal bus stop pick up points. Should pupils need to return home, parents and/or carers will need to collect pupils from school. This is to ensure the safety of pupils.
Schools are working closely with their governing bodies and the local authority to minimise the disruption as far as possible, and we appreciate your support for all our staff and pupils.
Your school will update you directly on local arrangements and will continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
Kind regards,
Gaynor Davies
Director of Education and Inclusion Services

School Centenary Celebrations
Fri 27 Jan 2023We are proud to say that despite the building works, our school has reached it's centenary!
We will be celebrating this achievement before it is sadly demolished in the next few months, to make room for for the new school.
As part of these celebrations, the children will be taking part in a variety of activities, the week beginning February 6th.
Each year group will be looking at what it was like to be a pupil in a different decade. The list is below.
Nursery - 2010s
Reception- 2000s
Yr1- 90s
Yr 2- 80s
Yr 3- 70s
Yr 4- 50s and 60s
Yr 5- 30s and 40s
Yr 6- 1900s to 30s
On Friday February 17th we are holding a celebration party, where pupils can dress up (if they wish), as part of the decade they have studied and they can bring in a small plate of party food.
We would also like to make a display of photographs of pupils past and present and any memories you wish to share.
Please could you send any photographs to the school admin:
admin@pontyclunprimary.rctcbc.cymru
If you are, or know a past pupil that would like to visit the school for the last time, then you are welcome to come on Monday February 13th from 3.45pm to 5.00pm. (More information to follow).
We look forward to seeing you.
Many thanks.

Industrial Action
Wed 25 Jan 2023As you no doubt are aware, school leader’s union, NAHT Cymru will now engage in industrial action short of strike and the NEU is currently taking discontinuous strike action. The NEU have declared their intent to undertake industrial action on Wednesday February 1st.
These actions may affect the usual provision Pontyclun Primary is able to provide.
At present all classes in school will be running as normal on that day.
However, union members have the right to decide to undertake industrial action up to the day of the strike and may inform the school by 8am on Wednesday February 1st that they will not be teaching their class.
Staff may also be affected by industrial action in their own pupils’ classes and this may impact on their childcare arrangements resulting in them being unavailable to teach their class.
In these situations, I will be obliged to send a ParentMail out to parents/carers as soon as I have been told, informing them that their child will not be able to be taught that day. It would therefore be advantageous for parents/carers to have alternative childcare arrangements in place should this situation occur.
Hopefully this period of dispute will be ended shortly and we will be able to continue with normal school life as soon as possible.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Kind regards,
Mr H Roberts

Strike Action
Mon 23 Jan 2023As you are aware teachers unions have balloted their members for strike action during the months of February and March.
The dates provided by the unions for strike action are:
- 1st February
- 14th February
- 15th March
- 16th March
Confirmation of our arrangements will be communicated to parents / carers, once we have been notified by the Unions and the Local Authority.
I will endeavour to ensure this reaches you no later than Wednesday 25th January 2023 to ensure you have at least a week to make child care arrangements should you need to do so.
I appreciate this is a difficult time for parents and apologise in advance for any disruptions this may cause you or your family.
Kind regards
Mr H Roberts
