Our Curriculum 2022
Curriculum for Wales
Pontyclun Primary School Curriculum
We have been on our journey to the Curriculum for Wales since 2019, where we have reviewed what was already working at and what we need to add and develop. Through training and many lengthy discussions, we established the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ that learners experience in pursuit of the four purposes. We identified key steps for our curriculum
• To provide authentic contexts for learning
• To develop greater learner independence
• To increase resilience in problem solving
We have a purpose-led curriculum, which aligns with the mandatory requirements of:
Welsh, English, Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE), Religion, values and ethics (RVE), cross curricular skills of literacy, numeracy and digital competency.
Through pedagogical research, collaborative working and enquiry, we have made a move from 'content to concept' style learning. We are working within a group of schools to develop a shared understanding of concepts and ideas. Through the idea of a Big Concept Question for each topic, we have begun to look at how this question can be answered, and be explored through various contexts that will create understanding of knowledge, skills, enquiry and experiences. A big part of each topic will be pupil reflection on what have they learnt, how did they learn it and their level of understanding.
Review
The school will review the curriculum through self- evaluation activities as part of the school’s MER cycle. This includes pupil voice, governing body and our parent council.

“Climb high, climb higher”
Our pupils enter our school with bright inquisitive minds, ready to learn, develop and grow.
- While with us we will build a community in Pontyclun Primary School where children all feel safe and secure.
- They will be motivated to expand their own lives and the lives of those around them.
- They will continually strive to be determined and ambitious in their learning, without the fear of failure.
- They will be resilient learners accepting of challenge and ready to ‘give their all,’ in all they do.
- They will be good role models, who inspire each other, through a love of learning and by being motivated to be positive team players supporting each other in their endeavours.
- They will take pride in becoming self-sufficient, independent individuals - both educationally and for life.
- They will understand and engage in their community, making a difference to theirs and the lives of others.
- They will experience a culture of mutual respect and acceptance with children moving onto their next venture with the social skills and values to set them on the path to achieve their dreams.
